Broken soup By Jenny Valentine
Book review
The Book Itself.
The main character is Rowan. She is 15 and her family is pretty messed up. Like the puddle of breakages and spillage caused by a dropped breakfast tray, which Rowan’s six-year-old sister calls “broken soup”. Her parents’ marriage has failed, and her father has gone. Not known to him, but Rowan has taken over the so called mothers responsibilities, including the care of her 6 year old sister, but hides the truth to her dad because she is scared that she will get taken away from her depressed mum. Why did her parent’s marriage not work? Well her brother Jack died. It all went wrong after that. Luckily rowan meets an older boy called Harper and starts a friend relationship with him. She also meets another girl called Bee who can help her with the film strip she apparently dropped at the grocery store.
My Comment.
I would recommend this book to a year 7 and 8 level and would suggest the book for girls as it is more of a girly book. It is a book that keeps you interested the whole way through and gets more and more exciting as it goes on. It’s kind of a mystery book (but not like a Nancy Drew). It has some sad and worrying bits in it so if you are into that then it’s perfect for you. Overall this is a fantastic book and the best book I have ever read.
